Fr. Dale Koster, age 94, of Carroll, died Friday, May 31, 2019 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless, Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City. Concelebrants will be the Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City. Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard’s Choir. Lector will be Sister LuAnn Hannasch, R.S.M. Gift Bearers will be Alice Thielen, and Anita Hannasch. Casket bearers will be Wade Thielen, Douglas Hannasch, Ray Koster, Lyle Staiert, Loren Schroeder, and Craig Koster. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The Carroll 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will form an honor guard for the funeral Mass.
Friends may call at St. Bernard’s Church in Breda after 4 p.m. on Monday, where there will be a Rosary prayed at 5 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.
Visitation will resume at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

Reverend Dale Koster, the son of Clem and Hazel (Van Erdewyk), was born on August 19, 1924 on the family farm between Arcadia, and Breda, Iowa. He graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in Breda in 1942. After high school he worked on the farm for four years before enrolling at Trinity College in Sioux City, he spent one year there before enrolling at Loras College in Dubuque where he lettered in baseball, and graduated in 1950. Fr. Koster then attended Conception Seminary in Conception, Missouri, and he was ordained to Priesthood on May 5, 1954 by Most Reverend Joseph M. Mueller. After his ordination he attended Creighton University in Omaha, where he obtained his Masters of Science Degree, and certification as principal and superintendent in education.
Fr. Koster’s assignments as an assistant Pastor included: St. Mary’s Parish, Danbury; St. Cecelia’s Parish, Algona; Sacred Heart Parish, Templeton; St. Joseph’s Parish, Carroll where he also taught at Kuemper Catholic High School for three years. His assignments as Pastor included: Sacred Heart Parish, Alvord, and St. Mary’s Parish, Doon; Superintendent of Schools, St. Edmond Catholic High School, Ft. Dodge, 3 years; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Mt. Carmel, 7 years; St. Mary’s Parish, Armstrong, 12 years; St. Joseph’s Parish, Lohrville, 10 years. Fr. Koster retired from active ministry in 1996. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards.
Survivors include his siblings: Alma Schroeder of Elma, Anita (Duane) Hannasch of Carroll, Urban (Patricia) Koster of Breda, Norma Jean Ludwig of Denison, Myrna (Van) Schmidt of Three Forks, MT, Alice Thielen of Carroll; brother-in-law: Otmar Bierl of Arcadia; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Fr. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Hazel Koster; his brothers: Floyd and Teresa (Garcia) Koster, Edgar and Delores (Bachman) Koster, Jerome and Wilda Jean (Black) Koster; his sisters: Pearl and Irvin Staiert, Elaine Bierl, and Helen Bertrend; two siblings in infancy: Margaret Mary, and Leo; brothers-in-law: Ivan Schroeder, Romaine Ludwig, and Franklin Thielen; nephews: Patrick Koster, Mark Koster, John Ludwig, Joseph Thielen; nieces: Kristy Koster, and Donna McBride.
