Lorraine Vonnahme, age 80, of Carroll, and formerly of Arcadia, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. The Celebrant will be Fr. Mark Stoll. Con-Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Sharon Bierl and the St. John’s Choir. Lector will be Tom Grote. Gift Bearers will be Jenny Stone, Laura Rothchild, Kim Brix, and Emery Vonnahme. Eucharistic Ministers will be Steve and Rose Vonnahme. Casket Bearers will be Wes Thelen, Matt Thelen, David Vonnahme, Jim Vonnahme, Jake Vonnahme, Luke Vonnahme, Kyle Vonnahme, Ben Vonnahme, and Noah Kouri. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Arcadia. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral Mass.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, after 4 p.m. on Friday, where there will be a Rosary prayed at 5 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Born on January 18, 1936 at Carroll, Iowa, Lorraine was the daughter of Herman and Colette (Schettler) Grote. She grew up on the family farm west of Mt. Carmel, and graduated from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in 1954.
On April 21, 1956 Lorraine was united in marriage to Lyle Vonnahme at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Mt. Carmel. The couple made their home near Arcadia, where Lyle was engaged in farming, and Lorraine assisted in the operation, and became a devoted homemaker.
Lorraine enjoyed gardening, the farmer’s market, cooking, and baking especially her cinnamon rolls, and her pies. She also enjoyed traveling with her sisters, her card club, frequent trips to casinos, and volunteering at St. Anthony Hospital, and New Hope Village. Most of all Lorraine enjoyed the time she spent with her family. Lorraine was a member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, former member of St. John’s Parish in Arcadia, and current member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.
Left to celebrate Lorraine’s life is her husband of over 60 years Lyle Vonnahme of Carroll; their children: Steve (Rose) Vonnahme of Altoona, Mike (Janene) Vonnahme of Glidden, Lisa (Tom) Kouri of Arcadia, John (Cathy) Vonnahme of Arcadia, and Joe (Angie) Vonnahme of Carroll; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Norbert “Fiddle” Grote of Glidden, Jack (Doreen) Grote of Carroll, James (Mary Ann) Grote of Cave Creek, AZ, Bill (Nancy) Grote of Withee, WI, Ted (Peggy) Grote of Gibson City, IL, Jeane (John) Rosener of South Sioux, NE, Mary (Leonard) Sailer of Manning, Alice (John) Hamilton of Jefferson, and Judy (Duane “Butch”) Olberding of Iowa City; her sisters-in-law: Irma Grote of Carroll, Joyce Grote of Minooka, IL, Gladys Steinkamp of Arcadia, and Norma Vonnahme of Arcadia, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Julie Vonnahme, her grandson Nathan Vonnahme; her brothers: Paul, Ralph, and Leonard Grote, and her sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law: Alice (Leo) Schmitz, Leon Vonnahme, Leroy Vonnahme, Loren Steinkamp, Vera (Roland) Booth, and Duane Vonnahme in infancy.
