Richard Rutten, age 92, of Carroll, died Thursday, June 1, 2023 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his wife and children.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at St. Lawrence Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The celebrant will be Fr. Kevin Richter. Con-celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Kathy Halbur and Kathleen Macke. Mass Server will be Adalynn Pietig. Lectors will be Jamie Hatfield and Laura Snyder. Henry Janning, Oliver Janning, Evelyn Bradford, and Penelope Bradford will present the offertory gifts. Casket Bearers will be Jim Rutten, Jeff Rutten, Matt Hatfield, Josh Snyder, Joe Janning, and Ben Bradford. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Visitation will be held at the Sharp Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. on Monday. A Carroll Knights of Columbus Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. with the Carroll Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus standing at attention. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church on Tuesday morning where visitation will resume from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

Born on November 19, 1930 to Frank and Dorothy (Bruening) Rutten, he was the oldest of nine children. Raised on a farm near Mt. Carmel he attended Mt. Carmel School graduating in the top ten of his class…(There were only ten). He enlisted in the United States Navy on January 1, 1951 and served in the Korean Conflict aboard the Battleship USS New Jersey BB62 until November of 1954 attaining the rank of Machinist Mate 2nd Class.
Richard was married to Ruth Sibbel on April 7, 1955. Together they raised four children, Allan (Cindy) of Pleasant Hill, Dennis (Joan) of Carroll, James (Mary) of Bellevue, NE, and Lisa (Philip) LaPenna of Marquette, MI.
Richard was the Iowa Regional Sales Manager for Air-Way Vacuum of Omaha. In 1955 he and his first wife Ruth established and operated Rutten’s Vacuum Center in Carroll until their retirement in 1995.
“Dick” was an avid fisherman and family man who lived a full life. A gifted vocalist, he sang for the R.S.V.P. singers, Elks Chorus and St. Lawrence Parish Choir. He was a member of the Carroll Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and member of the Carroll American Legion. He loved to golf, camp and follow sports on television.
Richard married Mary Jo (Spagnolo-Kelley) on September 16, 2016. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His step-daughter Kathleen Shelton of Kansas City. His brothers: Robert of Omaha, Tom (Suzy) of Naples, FL; his sisters: Janice Brink of Minneapolis, MN, Donna (Denny)LeGros of Omaha, Mary Kay (David) Schmeiser of Carroll, Karen (Gary) Kunecke of Carroll, and Joleen Hauser of Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth on December 5, 2015, his parents Frank and Dorothy Rutten, his parents-in-law: John and Elizabeth (Soppe) Sibbel, his brother Ronnie of Davenport, brothers-in-law Richard (Dick) Brink, Jerry Hauser, Johnny Sibbel, and Clarence Wempe and sister-in-law Lorraine Wempe.
