Born July 6, 1931, in Early, Iowa, Dorothy was the daughter of John and Helena (Sampers) Drey. She was the fourth child of eight. She attended elementary school at Sacred Heart in Early, Iowa and graduated high school from St. Angela’s Academy in 1948. In 1950, Dorothy graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing on June 28, 1955. She married the love of her life, Robert Heisterkamp. To this union, four children were welcomed.
Dorothy started her nursing career at St. Anthony’s in the operating room.
