Roger James Slater, age 71, of rural Glidden, IA, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE, surrounded by his family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden. Music for the Mass will be by Mary Ross. Lector for the Mass will be Robyn Eddy. Honorary gift bearers will be Owen, Griffin, and Dylan Slater. Casket bearers will be Chris Eddy, Chris Slater, Steve Anderson, Dave Lawrence, Chris Kriegler, and Tony Badding. Honorary casket bearers will be Jerry Mathine, Gary Holmes, Dave Altman, Terry McConnell, John Hyland, Mark Pingrey, Dan Swalla, Dennis Eddy, and Stan Bowman. Burial will be in the North Raccoon Cemetery near Glidden.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5 – 7 P.M. on Monday evening. The casket will be moved to St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation without greeting the family will resume until 10:15 A.M.

Those in attendance at Roger’s visitation and Mass are asked to abide by Covid-19 guidelines and facemasks are required at the funeral home and at the church.
Roger was born on August 20, 1949, in Templeton, IA, and he was the son of Donald and Geraldine (Trecker) Slater. He grew up in Templeton and graduated from Kuemper High School. He attended St. Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. Following college, he farmed near Templeton with his father and worked for Garst Seed Company in Coon Rapids for 35 years. After retirement, he worked in sales for various seed companies. He was married to Gloria Diane Lyons on January 2, 1971, and to this union, two children were born: Nathan and Evan. The couple later divorced. Roger served on the Carroll County Water and Soil Commission for several years and he also served on the Coon Rapids Fire Department. He was a member of the Coon Rapids Jaycees, Coon Rapids Lions Club, and Kiwanis. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton parish in Glidden where he had been a choir member. Roger was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He enjoyed fishing, golf, mowing his yard, and planting trees. He cherished spending time with his family and he loved his house on the river.
Roger is survived by his spouse Diane Halbur of rural Glidden; two sons: Nathan Slater (Jennifer) of Newport Beach, CA, and Evan Slater (Lisa) of Denver, CO; Diane’s children: Kimberly Wiles of Coon Rapids, IA, and Jonathan Halbur of Coon Rapids, IA; nine grandchildren; his siblings: brother David Slater (Sue Ann) of Omaha, NE, brother Joseph Slater (Susan Cooper) of Bakersfield, CA, brother Steven Slater (Shari) of Papillion, NE, sister Peggy Buman (Tom) of Carroll, IA, sister Susan Badding (Dan) of Panora, IA, and Lisa Barks (Brad) of Wildwood, MO; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Geraldine Slater; a brother Thomas Slater.
