Gladys Steinkamp, age 89, of Arcadia died Monday, December 23, 2019 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Friedrichsen. Music will be by Sharon Bierl and the St. John’s Choir. Mass Servers will be Caden Vonnahme, Brenden Vonnahme, and Sam Julin. Lector will be Beth Grace. Gift Bearers will be Lisa Kouri and Linda Julin. Eucharistic Ministers will be Allen Vonnahme and Steve and Rose Vonnahme. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Donna Rae Lenz, Beth Grace, Sharon Bierl, Joyce Bierl, Linda Julin, Ann Schulte, Christi Irelan, Michele Darrah, and Lisa Kouri. Casket Bearers will be Allen Vonnahme, Bruce Vonnahme, Jeff Booth, Steve Vonnahme, Mike Vonnahme, John Vonnahme, and Joe Vonnahme. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral mass.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Friday morning at the church in Arcadia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left at the church to be directed to St. John’s Parish.

Gladys, the daughter of John and Leona (Otto) Vonnahme was born on July 17, 1930, near Mt. Carmel, Iowa. She grew up in Arcadia, attending St. John’s School, St. Angela’s Academy, and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1948. After her formal education, Gladys worked at the Arcadia Legion Hall, as well as assisted her parents on the farm.
Gladys met Lorne Steinkamp at a dance at the Arcadia Legion Hall, and the couple married on January 24, 1959, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. The couple made their home near Arcadia where Gladys helped on the farm, assisted at Vonnahme Bar & Grill and devoted her time to being a caretaker for her mother.
After they retired from farming, Lorne and Gladys built a house in
Arcadia and enjoyed many years there together. Gladys continued working for Stork Catering and working many weddings and dances at the Arcadia Legion Hall.
In her free time, Gladys enjoyed playing cards, bowling, bingo, gardening, canning, mowing lawn, and her Friday shopping trips. She was an avid Chicago Cubs, and Iowa State Basketball fan, and enjoyed cheering them on whenever she could. She will be remembered for her famous Carmel Corn around Christmastime. Gladys was a member of St. John’s Parish, and Guild, as well as the Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary.
Gladys is survived by her brother, Lyle Vonnahme of Carroll; sisters-in-law: Norma Vonnahme of Arcadia, and Neva Whitaker of Orange, CA as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Lorne Steinkamp; parents John and Leona Vonnahme; parents-in-law, Frank and Emma (Damm) Steinkamp; brothers: Leon, Leroy, and Duane Vonnahme; sisters: Alice (Leo) Schmitz, and Vera (Roland) Booth; as well as her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Lorraine Vonnahme, Merlin (Lenore) Steinkamp, Ray (Virginia) Steinkamp, Melvin (Bernice) Steinkamp, Cleone (Rollie) Evers, Leota (Harold) Eich, Virginia “Jean” (Wilfred) Wernimont, and Bill Whitaker.
