Germaine Schrad, age 82, of Carroll, Iowa, died Friday, February 17, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel, Iowa.  The celebrant will be Fr. Mark Stoll.  Music will be by Nancy Lemker and the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Choir with Germaine’s daughter-in-law, Kathy Schrad as vocalist.  Lectors will be Germaine’s grandsons: Ryan Kramer, and Joel Kramer.  Gift bearers will be Germaine’s grandchildren: Lauren Ulveling, Logan Schrad, and Carter Schrad.  Honorary casket bearers will be Germaine’s grandchildren: Lauren Ulveling, Logan Schrad, Carter Schrad, and Germaine’s niece: Judy Broich.  Casket bearers will be Germaine’s grandsons: Christopher Kramer, Ryan Kramer, Joel Kramer, Airmen Zachary Schrad, and Germaine’s nephews: Mark Anthofer, and Larry Lappe.  Burial will follow the funeral mass at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Maple River, Iowa. 

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, where there will be a rosary prayed at 5 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Born on August 16, 1934 at Westphalia, Iowa, Germaine was the daughter of Leo and Magdalene (Altman) Gubbels.  She grew up and attended school at Westphalia, Iowa.  On May, 4, 1960 Germaine was united in marriage to Duane Schrad at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Maple River, Iowa.  The couple lived in Carroll, Iowa for a brief time before moving to their family farm near Maple River, Iowa.  Germaine worked alongside her husband Duane farming her entire married life.  She enjoyed the farm lifestyle, and the rewards from their hard work.  She also enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and spending time with her family.  Germaine was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, and a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Maple River, Iowa. 

Living family members include: her children: Carla Schrad of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Linda Kramer of Boone, Iowa, and Thomas (Kathy) Schrad of Renner, South Dakota; two step-children: Mark (Cathy) Lynam of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Lee (Patricia) Lynam of Carlsbad, California; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; her siblings: Mildred Broich of Carroll, Iowa, Henrietta Tusa of St. Peter, Minnesota, Hyacinth Lappe of Panora, Iowa, and Eunice Madsen of Sprit Lake, Iowa, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. 

Germaine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Duane in 2011, a great-granddaughter Claire Kramer, and sisters: Thelma Anthofer, Delores Campbell, Janet Gubbels, and Judy Gubbels, her brothers: Kenneth Gubbels, Donald Gubbels, Patrick Gubbels, and Virgil Gubbels.
