Helen Stevens, age 88, of Templeton passed away Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial is at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton. Visitation is from 4 PM to 6 PM on Monday, August 9, 2021, at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, where there will be a Prayer Service at 6 PM. Visitation will resume at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton on Tuesday morning at 9:30 am.
Helen Emma, daughter of Fred and Mary (Kennebeck) Masching, was born June 17, 1933, at home on the family farm near Carroll, Iowa. She attended Saints Peter and Paul School in Carroll. In 1947, the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she graduated from St. Mary's High School. In 1952, Helen moved back to Iowa with her sister and worked in the Carroll Bakery and did childcare.
On June 16, 1953, Helen was united in marriage with Marvin Stevens at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. Eight children were born to this union. Helen and Marvin farmed near Templeton until retiring in 1994. Helen also worked as a Certified Nurse's Aide in the 1980s until rheumatoid arthritis slowed her down. After Marvin passed away in 2001, Helen moved into Templeton. In 2011, she became a resident of St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Helen was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Templeton and was active in the Guild and Catholic Daughters of Americas. She enjoyed weaving rugs, sewing, fishing, bingo and playing cards.
On Thursday, August 5, 2021, Helen passed away at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. She was 88 years, 1 month 19 days of age.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin in 2001, daughter Kathleen Haynes; son James Stevens; two great-grandchildren Ava Stevens and Azylee McCarthy; and her parents Fred and Mary (Kennebeck) Masching; Siblings; Alice (Joe) Stitz, Marian (Albert) Berning; Viola (Simon) Langel; Leon (Dorothy) Masching; Alvin Masching and Irene in infancy. Her parents in-law Frank and Louise (Kroeger) Stevens and her brothers and sisters-in-law: Alver Schmitz; Joe (Alice) Stevens; Don (Dorothy) Stevens; Melvin (Alberta) Stevens; Ray Vonnahme; and Gladys Stevens.
She is survived by six children: Robert Stevens and wife Darlene of Yuma, AZ; Connie and husband Mike Riesselman of Willey; JoAnn and husband Mike Klocke of Coon Rapids; John Stevens and wife Mary Lou of Templeton; Sharon Stevens of Waukee; Susan and husband Steve Frank of Nesbit, Mississippi; Son-in-law Arnold Haynes of Council Bluffs; Daughter-in-law Kay Stevens of Carroll; 20 Grandchildren; 27 Great-grandchildren; her sister: Julie Schmitz of Carroll; a brother Marvin (Judy) Masching of Worthington, MN; Sisters-in-law Ruthie Masching of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Delores Vonnahme of Carroll and by numerous other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
